Halloween design. I’ve come to the conclusion that the reason I redesign this so much in comparison to all my other sites is that (a) it’s a small site, and easy to redesign; and (b) I look at it every damn day, thus causing me to get utterly sick of it much faster than I do the others. I rather like this design, but I won’t be able to get sick of it, I’m sure, since I have to think up something to replace it in a scant couple of weeks after Halloween has been and gone. And pants, I hadn’t thought of that before. Guess I could always go back to the old design. Or something…… gah. Must sleep.

Oh, and I forgot to mention…. the combination of Megs’ enthusiasm, Rowan’s taunting, and the persistance of the mad Irishwoman in my head bouncing up and down going “Go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go on, go *on*” have caused me to sign up for NaNoWriMo. Cos, you know, 20-odd websites to maintain after I’ve finished doing 10 hour shifts at work aren’t enough for me to do. Doi! But I was lured by the possibility of a party at the end of it. This is gonna be fun.

So, the weekend was very

So, the weekend was very good. Long entry coming up. Sorry ’bout that.

I acquired some birthday money (to the tune of £60), but I can’t decide how to spend it. I’m thinking of one of these:
1) Allaire / Macromedia Homesite – my fave HTML Editor, which is would be nice to have a full (legal) copy of.
2) Mememememe – splurge the cash on getting my hair done, plus massage, facial, and all that.
3) Computer desk, and chair, and possibly a new mouse, so I can get my ‘puter (and my bum) off of the dining room table / chair that I’ve been using.
Opinions, anyone? I can’t make up my mind….

Other birthday stuff I got includes a black “pashminetta” (damn big but light scarf), jewellery and candles from the parents, the Linkin Park and Alien Ant Farm albums from my brother, and a one-off designer mirror from Alison (she’s a glass and mirror designer; my birthday present to her is a domain and website for her business). And it’s not even my actual birthday til tomorrow. *g*

Had a pretty uncomfortable journey down on Friday – I left Hull on the 4:30pm train (the last direct one of the day) and it was full. My seat was at one of those four-seats with a table between, and since there was someone opposite me and beside me, I couldn’t stretch my legs at all, or even really move them much. For over 3 hours. Ouch, much cramp. The seats aren’t really designed for short people, either. Still the journey across London was nice and easy, and I even had time to stop for a burger and chips before I caught the Hastings train. That was much less crowded, but it was one of those where you have to slide the windows down and use the outside handle to open the door, and since they only close from the inside, it got very very drafty. I ended up walking up and down the carriage closing them from time to time. God knows why anyone else didn’t do one or two, cos they were all sitting there looking cold. Mad.

On Saturday, I slept in for ages, and when I finally did get up, we went out to Finchcocks, where Alison had a stall at their craft fair. There was all kinds of spiffy stuff, but I had no cash, so so much for that. Heheh. On the way back, we drove through Battle, where I saw a Saxon soldier chatting on a mobile phone…. slightly surreal. *g* It was the Battle of Hastings anniversary, see, and they’d been doing the reconstruction. That evening, I went round to Clara’s to see her new place and meet her cats, and then we went down to the old town to meet Alison, and Debby and Beccy – friends from school that we haven’t seen since we all went in various directions 9 or so years ago! There was much hilarity and catching up. Some guy in the pub actually sent a rose across to Beccy, then sent his mate to ask her name. She had to tell him she was very much attached. Awww.

Sunday was the meet up with Daisy, The Cheeseman, ‘the child’, and Red. We had fun, meandering through the old town, drooling over leather and velvet clothing, and being tempted by the tattoo parlour. ‘The child’ is just adorable – very bright and energetic. Eventually the shops all shut, and it decided to rain, so we went home at 5pm-ish. That evening was the traditional birthday Chinese takeaway nosh-up, which me and Martin went and fetched. Far too much food for four people there. Yum! Then spent the rest of the time vegging out, pretty much. Watched Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, got pressies, generally faffed around.

Yesterday I started out on my journey back at 4:30pm. Got to London at 6pm. Now, during the rush hour, Kings Cross underground station closes down for, I think, all but one line. At any rate, the Northern line (that’s the black on on the underground map) doesn’t stop there between about 4:30 and 7:30, and that’s the one I take from London Bridge when I’m crossing London on my way between Hastings and Hull. Since my train from Kings Cross was due to leave at 7:30, I decided to take the Thameslink instead. And I’m glad I did…. the train goes right through the belly of the city, and seeing it like that instead of just travelling under it like I usually do reminded me of what I love about the city, especially the city at night. It’s fucking glorious, the streets, the lights, the river and the traffic going by, the contrast between the huge majestic older buildings and the sometimes run-down, sometimes high-tech, newer ones. I remember remarking in a bit of a pretentious moment that the city is a “symphony in grey”, but at night it’s all black-red brick, charcoal and orange from the streetlights, with the occasional expanse of marble. I’d lost sight of all that a year ago, living there in pretty miserable conditions. All of a sudden I kind of miss it. But I wouldnt’ want to live there unless I could really afford it. And it’s expensive. Feh.

It was a slightly surreal journey in a way – the train was very quiet, and relatively empty to start with, and a man sitting behind me had a radio or something that was playing that formless unchallenging jazz that often ends up as lift music. Heh. I think I will take that route in future when I’m passing through, even though it takes slightly longer. Definitely the better way of doing things. And then as I was leaving Kings X Thameslink to make my way to the mainline station, an announcement came over the tannoy that made me smile (imagine in a West Indian accent for most accurate effect):
This is a non-smoking station. Please extinguish any cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or illegal substances you may be smoking. Thank you.

So anyway, I got home OK. At 11:30pm. Where I had a mountain of email waiting for me. I’ll finish going through it tonight…. maybe…. because I now also have the first two eps of Buffy Season 6, and the first ep of Angel Season 3 to watch. Plus Andromeda which B taped for me. Heheheh. Wheeeee!

I’m monster matched as a Vampire
and my parenting ability is on the Three Men and a Baby level.
Well, that sounds about right. Heheheh.

The girl who played Wesley’s girlfriend Virginia on Angel is on some kind of courtroom drama type thing on BBC1 at the moment. No idea what it’s about because I don’t have the sound on that screen. But I assume she’s the case-of-the-week character.

While waiting (and waiting, and waiting, and waiting) for the train this morning, one of the railway staff appeared and started to sweep up the rubbish on the other platform. And while he did so, he whistled a merry tune – a very tuneful and accurate rendition of “Summertime” from Porgy and Bess. The station is one of those red-brick, covered tube-y ones, like you see on Thomas the Tank Engine (or you did when I was young) and it has accoustics which distort the “Haha, we cancelled your train again” announcements beyond all recognition, but apparantly are perfectly suited to a single whistler. Twas very nice, and the sunny autumn weather kinda added to the atmos. I managed not to join in at the time, but now I have that song on my brain, and I can feel it gearing up to continue on to the rest of the opera some time soon. Will – not – burst – into – song…..

OK, here are the answers to the 10 Things thing:

#1 I did indeed have hair long enough to sit on. And it was a royal nuisance… I couldn’t do anything with it, it just hung there. So in the end I had 18 inches chopped off, bringing it to just below shoulder length, and it’s gone up and up from there.

#2 Piano, electric keyboard, clarinet, balaleika, 3 recorders (treble, descant, soprano), 2 penny whistles (tin and wooden), horn (of the small hunting variety), small ceramic ‘street whistle’ in the shape of a house (from Prague), and an odd hybrid reeded instrument that I picked up in Australia and now can’t remember the name of. Yes, some of those double up a bit which I guess is cheating. But I can also knock out a tune on the saxophone, guitar, violin and digeridoo (well, decent sounding noise on that last one). Oh yeah, and my primary instrument is voice. Or it was when I was actually studying it. Laaa.

#3 ‘fraid so. Went out with him from aged 15 to 18, he was nasty, jealous, vicious. Maybe not quite so nasty that he deserved a massive heart attack at 24, but I still couldn’t bring myself to be upset.

#5 I was playing down the road (back when it was relatively safe to let your five year old do such things) and this guy came up and asked me for directions to a nearby road. I knew where is was in a vague ‘somewhere over there’ sense, so I told him he could come to my house where my Mum had a map. But he insisted I could show him…. long and short of it was, my Dad came looking, the guy tried hiding us in a ditch, I called out to Dad. Police presumably dealt with guy (they knew of him), all’s well that ends well.

#6 My Dad is 15 years older than my Mum, and he’s the baby of his family – his older brother being 13 years his senior. So my cousin Malcolm and his older sister (I can’t remember which she is – oops) are older than my Mum. Malcolm calls her his little auntie. He’s evil (in the very best way, and in the tradition of our family).

#7 I was 18, he was 25, and I’m pretty sure that I was the mentally more mature. *g* Six months of extreme UST, but nothing actually kicked off until two days after my final exam (so I wasn’t in school, but was techinically still a pupil), and it was all very…. interesting. Heh.

#8 My second earliest TV memory is a Star Trek:TOS episode, and Captain Kirk and crew were my heros from that moment on. Yay Trekkiness.

#9 Despite eye tests turning out fine, there’s something going on there. My first set of stitches was after I misjudged running round the house when I was about 3 or 4 years old, and ran into the corner of it instead, splitting my head open, and the second set was when I misjudged walking past an open caravan door and hit the sharp metal edge. Both on the left side. And I walk into things a lot.

#10 About 10 years ago when we were 15-ish, we (me and Alison) were at Brands Hatch for truck racing (whee!) and while wondering around in the break we saw this guy that we were sure was off the telly, signing autographs. We couldn’t figure out who he was, so we weren’t sure if we wanted an autograph…. so we went and asked him. He got in a bit of a huff, and wouldn’t give us the autograph. Later, we discovered it was Chris Tarrent. LOL.

So three cheers to Megs, Celia and Carolyn. I’m allergic to cats, dust and pollen, but not dogs, nuts, or washing powder.

My hair has this odd

My hair has this odd vaguely Japenese vibe going on, you know. The red has faded a fair bit now, so it’s more reddish light brown on top of the black. That, plus half an inch of blonde-ish roots. Maybe I’ll spend some of my birthday money on getting my hair done again, but a more dramatic red this time. Except I need a new monitor, and I want Homesite. Gahh.

Re. the cons, by the way, I got my ticket for Eclipse the other day. Cocktail party, baby! And they’ve announced Danny Strong now, too. Hee! On the other hand, there was an almighty cock-up with our Inferno tickets (I knew I should have bloody phoned). My form never arrived, and neither did Lucy & Angelsbitch’s or Daisy and The Cheeseman’s. We all posted the first morning. Red posted her form last thing in the afternoon, and hers arrived fine and got her into the cocktail party. It seems that the first batch of post to the PO Box just vanished into thin air. Lovely. So we had to rebook by phone, and we’ve missed out on the cocktail party. *sigh*

Oh, and in case I forget to mention it, I’m off to Hastings at 4pm tomorrow, back late Monday night. Should be meeting up with some friends from school I haven’t seen for years, as well as the above mentioned Red, Daisy, and The Cheeseman (plus Demon Child). Yay!

Interestingly, the “10 Things About Me” thingy has done a big internet-y circle (or something), and arrived in the ‘Buffy blogging’ community. So what the hell, I didn’t do it last time… so here’s my effort now. Nine of these are true – where’s the red herring? :

#1 My hair used to be long enough to sit on.
#2 I own twelve musical instruments, and can play them all with varying degrees of competency; however none of them is my primary instrument.
#3 My first serious boyfriend is now dead, and I’m not sorry.
#4 I’m allergic to nuts, dogs, and Daz washing powder.
#5 When I was five, I was kinda abducted by a paedophile. Which was way more traumatic for my parents that it was for me.
#6 Some of my first cousins are older than my mother.
#7 I went out / had a relationship with one of my senior (high) school teachers.
#8 My parents brought me (and my brother) up on a steady diet of science fiction. I’ve been a Trekkie since I was three years old.
#9 I have a blind spot on my left side which has resulted in me needing two sets of stitches in the head Not to mention causing innumerable bruises.
#10 I once asked Chris Tarrent who he was, and he refused to tell me.

Go on then. Which one of those isn’t true? Answers on a comments pop-up to…..

# 1 Charlemagne
# 2 King David

# 7 Otto von Bismarck
# 8 George Washington
# 9 King Henry VIII Tudor

Which is alright by me. I always liked Charlemagne, though I didn’t study him in as much depth as, say, the fascinating Catherine d’Medici. [Side note – the mother recently returned an entire suitcase full of my Renaissance History gumph to me. Shall have to go through it again sometime] Anyway, what else did I get…. Jesus was #14, William the Conqueror #18 (1066 R Us!), and then Adolf Hitler at #21 followed by Napoleon Bonaparte, Genghis Khan, Josef Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung. Heh.

Oh god, what I am doing?! I have to go to bed. I’m so tired and I’ve got work in the morning. Fricking caffeinated painkillers….. I’m sure it’s all their fault.

*sigh* It had to happen

*sigh* It had to happen one of these days. I turned up for work at 7:45am (after having been off sick for a week) to discover that I’m actually on the 10am-8pm shift this week. Crap. Could’ve had two lovely more hours in bed! I live too far away to go home again, so I’ve stayed and I spose at least I’ll get home in time for Andromeda. Yay.

I made one of the cliques yesterday. It’s now open and ready for joining. It’s called We Want Him Dark and it’s for those of us who love evil Angelus and the darker side of souled Angel. Joiny joiny joiny!

I have vast amounts of catching up to do on my links list. I didn’t do much journal reading when I was ill… didn’t do much at all, actually, other than lay / sit around and go “guuurgh”. Oh well.

Went and got tickets for going down to Hastings at the weekend. Now I just have to ask the neighbours if they can look after the cats… if not, shall have to call B’s brother. I renewed my Young Persons Railcard for the last time, too, with 9 days to spare for the age limit. But there was a 15-month offer thing on it, so I’ll actually be using it until well after my 27th birthday. Heheheh. Scary thing, the picture I have on it was taken when I was at uni, and I have my natural blonde hair. I can’t decide if it really looks like me or not.

Hmm. Swift thinking / jumping / whatever. I nearly got blown off Beachy Head once. That was an interesting weekend.

The neighbours seem to be attempting to power-drill their way in here. They could just come and knock on the front door if they’re that desperate to see our living room. Good job I’m not still trying to sleep, really. Russ and Char (and their ‘pod‘) left half an hour ago or so…. they came up on Friday to stay for a few days. It was fun. Wish they lived nearer. That’d be good. B has gone off to France with his parents for a week, and Megs and Heather are in Blackpool for the UCSL meet. And do I know anyone who doesn’t have a website?!

My stupid cold-thing still hasn’t gone. I’m just feeling ugg-y now, but I’m not getting any better! Very annoying. Oh well, time to go prevent myself from making the two cliques and one fansite that are nagging at me. Or maybe I’ll make ’em anyway. Shouldn’t take up much webspace…… but which domain to use?

Have been suffering from that

Have been suffering from that heavy cold that seems to be going around. Still am, but not so badly today. Ugh. So I haven’t done a lot recently that’s very constructive. Except I think I may have to make an Andromeda related site…. hmmmm. But anyway, since I have nothing to say, here’s a write up / review thingy about Buffy. Lalalalalalalala. Roll on January.

Did some of those test things, too. Apparently, I’m 65% Goth, 50% Alternative, and 20% Trendy. Umm…. how is it that I’m 135% in total. Have I put on that much weight?….. *g* (Actually, I’m losing weight…. go me).

And if I was a transmorgifying witch person (is that the right word? My brain isn’t really working at the mo), the animals I’d be most likely to turn into are:
# 1 cat
# 2 dog
# 3 bat
# 4 goat/sheep
# 5 snake
# 6 ferret/weasel
# 7 owl
# 8 wolf
# 9 dolphin
# 10 cow/bull

I’m picking these things up from Gilly-chan’s blog, btw. And Gilly, I’d use the comment doofrey. I looooove to comment pointlessly. S’fun.

Alexander’s neurological examination didn’t bankrupt me as expected, and it turns out that he’s completely healthy there. I mean, obviously, there’s something wrong that’s causing the fits, but it’s almost certainly either a reaction to whatever mistreatment he suffered, or mild epilepsy. No tumours or brain damage, or anything scary like that. So they’ve just given me some antibiotics to see if that clears up the funny thing in his liver, and we’ll see how he is in two weeks.

I have the cold-that-won’t-leave. It’s been hanging around at least a week now, bestowing a new and interesting symptom on me every day. Today’s is olympic-level sneezing. Oh hooray.
