I have Salon Hair.

I have Salon Hair. It’s an odd feeling, especially since I know I’m never going to get it to go quite how the hairdresser did it again. Am I the only person who has that problem? Surely not. I have Salon Hair. It’s an odd feeling, especially since I know I’m never going to get it to go quite how the hairdresser did it again. Am I the only person who has that problem? Surely not. But I’m not a hair-style-y person – I never put anything on it (apart from coloured stuff, of course) – I just point the hairdryer and hope for the best. As for using one of those big round brushes…… if I try that, the brush usually has to be cut out of the resultant tangle. Happily, the hairdresser tells me that pointing the hairdryer and hoping should work well with this new cut. Hope so!

Wondered into Clinton’s Cards on the way back, cos I’d seen an Undertaker T shirt in the window (which I then couldn’t find inside, of course). But I discovered that the shop assistant and a customer (both in their 40’s) were having an intense discussion over whether Angel, Spike, or possibly Riley is sexiest. LOL! Y’see, Buffy rules! Thankyouverymuch.

I’m impressed

I’m pretty impressed to say, the UKBAWC seems to be coming up as one of the top search results for “Buffy” on all of the search engines I’ve tried (including some I hadn’t even heard of til I saw them on the site stats). Within the top 50, this is, but mainly way lower. And … Continue reading “I’m impressed”

Within the top 50, this is, but mainly way lower. And try searching for Buffy Angel UK, or even just Buffy UK, and *wham*, right up the top. No wonder it gets so many hits! LOL. I must’ve had a search-engine registration spasm when I did the new design last year. Should do the same for my other sites!

And continuing the search-engine testing thing, I’ve discovered that Spiked & Skewered doesn’t even appear on a search for Spike (on AltaVista), but tops the bill for William the Bloody. Fair enough. They’ve got the wrong addy, though….. must sort that out.

I’m bored now. Could do some more website stuff. But I’m going to bed instead. Blah.

That Tripod thing

Seems like the whole Tripod site deletion debacle may have been a technical glitch, rather than a crack down on fan sites. Doi. Just goes to show the power and immediacy (is that a word?) of email and the internet. Hmm.

I’m going to put the rest of my fic up at Soulstar today. Should be done in half an hour or so. Other than that, I’ve just mainly been pottering for the last couple of days – got some new affiliates for The Airlock. And I might even get the links page for this site done. You never know. *g*

Mmmmm, Thai foooooood

Should you ever find yourself in the town of Beverley, in East Yorkshire, I strongly suggest you try visiting the Muang Thai Restaurant on Lairgate. Went there last night for the second time, and it really is the best food in the world, ever. I just can’t emphasise just how fantastic it is. The atmosphere is lovely, too – small and friendly. They’re always full – booking is a couple of weeks in advance at the mo, I think. And like I said, the food is just……. *falls over from remembered taste-bud overload*

And on another note entirely, I’d been following the posts about validating sites at not.so.soft, Mo Morgan, and My 2p. In a moment of idle curiosity, I thought I’d see how this site checks out. Much to my surprise, it almost validates. The Javascript “type” is missing (cos I don’t remember what it is), and so is the alt tag from the blank gif. Otherwise, there are 3 things from the little “mood” gadget, and that’s it. Wow.

Oh…… bah!

Oh…… bah! Wrote a great big long post, didn’t think to copy it, and of course the browser crashes when I go to publish. Typical! Doi. I’ll have to try again. My archives had apparently gone for a wander. Odd. I’ve republished them. Still, if that’s the only fallout from the actually-not-very-Great Site Disappearance, I can live with that.

Had an unusual experience at lunchtime. Not interesting, just unusual. See, I’m just under 5’2″, so while maybe not qualifying as ickle, I’m certainly not a big thing either. So I had a bit of a surprise when I tried on a pair of very-fake-but-very-very-cheap fake leather trews and discovered they were a fair bit too short. I think I’d picked up some kiddies ones. D’oh!

I like what this guy, Tom, has to say about letters. Though I don’t quite get why 12-point Arial is sarcastic. It never seemed it to me. Maybe it’s when it’s in contrast to, say 11-point Arial in the same email? Hmm. And I can’t write with a fountain pen, either. My writing is kinda thin and spikey, so however narrow a nib I use, I end up with ink splodges everywhere, the letters all running into one another, and all in all, a great big mess. Nope, it’s ball-points for me. Tom seems like a nice bloke, anyhoo. Maybe I’m just biased towards musicians ;-) But he’s a flautist, and all the flautists I know are cool, so I reckon he is too. *g*

That post, though, has made me realise I really should write to my best friend. I don’t use the phone much for actual voice calls these days (mainly internet access, you see), and I don’t know if she checks her email much, so I’m not even sure if she knows my new address and phone no. Slack of me, I know. When we were in school *in the same class*, we used to write to each other all the time. Even when we were sitting next to each other (which was mostly). {work? what work?}. I found some of those letters not so long ago – paper conversations that probably wouldn’t make a blind bit of sense to anyone else, but were, and still are 10 years later, funny and personal to both of us. So yeah, I’m going to do it. I’ll write her an actual letter. I’m really looking forward to it now. :-) So thanks, Meg and Tom. Letters are good. Letters can be doodled on. Heehee!

Domain snobbery?

Domain snobbery – does it happen? I’m not just talking “I have a domain, so I’m better than x who has their site on a free server”. Which, incidentally, is a big pile of pants, since site design talent certainly isn’t related to the ability to afford and maintain a domain and server space! Domain snobbery – does it happen? I’m not just talking “I have a domain, so I’m better than x who has their site on a free server”. Which, incidentally, is a big pile of pants, since site design talent certainly isn’t related to the ability to afford and maintain a domain and server space! (See my own sites for reference *snort*). Granted a fair few people who have domains, have them because they’re very much into web design, and want their own space and name and all that, so domain-ed sites are often good stuff. But that’s not what I wanted to ramble about. I was thinking more “My domain’s better than your domain.” See, I have a few domains, and I wuv them all lots an lots. They’re all .co.uk’s though….. some of them are because I specifically wanted a .co.uk, and some cos, well, I pay a nice reasonable price for ’em. Also, I’m from the UK, so why not? Recently, though, (and not in relation to this site, mind you) it seems there’s a real preference to .com and .net’s. Perhaps I’m only just noticing something that’s been around a while. So, apart from being shorter, why would a .com or .net or .org or whatever, be better than a .co.uk or .org.uk? Personally, I quite like the way a .co.uk (or any other country-specific domain) locates a site / webmaster on the otherwise vague international web. (However, having said that, I’ve found a .nu that I might well register for a little project. *g*)

So, thoughts…… is there a better kind of domain? (Is anyone reading this thing? Helloooooo?……)

MX Records. Hmm.

Hmmm….. it’s just filtered through to my tiny brain why the applications and other form submissions to the UKBAWC might not be redirecting properly…… it’s the only decent reason I can come up with, anyway. Hmmm….. it’s just filtered through to my tiny brain why the applications and other form submissions to the UKBAWC might not be redirecting properly…… it’s the only decent reason I can come up with, anyway. See, on the old server, I had this webmail facility set up through Everyone.net, and to use that, the MX records had to be pointed to them. All well and good, worked fine. However, when I moved the domain to be hosted by Neil, I couldn’t have that any more, so I’ve got a funky control panel setup to make POP3 and Forwarding accounts instead. *But* although the email works fine otherwise, all the form submissions are still going to the webmail account, which (a) shouldn’t theortically be able to receive anything from the domain any more {bored yet?}, and (b) is going to be deleted any day now. What I think is happening is that when I transferred the site, I didn’t think to change the formmail script, so the forms are still using the script on the old server. And since I didn’t have an official account there, nothing was cancelled when I transferred out. Soooooooo….. I think it’s possible that the formmail is still going to the webmail because the internal settings still show the MX records as pointing to it. Is this possible? Happens with DNS records, so why not this? Or am I talking utter cack? Guess I’ll just have to get my own formmail sorted out on the new server, and see if that does the trick. Pants.

Sites and more sites

Now trying to see if I can get the lil Blogvoices thang to tell me how many comments there are. *crosses fingers* Haven’t done my links page yet, cos…. well…… I watched Buffy and Angel on Friday night (as usual). Laughed my arse off at Buffy, cos she didn’t get there in time to stop Riley leaving forever (*snigger*….. not that I really hate her, but it’s good to see the heroine not getting it all her way). And then I watched Angel. In which Darla and Drusilla caused much mayhem. *vbg* The upshot of this is, I’ve been doing a brand new Darla & Dru website all weekend. I promised myself I wouldn’t make any new sites now. Guess I lied. Ho hum ;-)

Mmmm, technology…

I think I might go to this computer fair thingy when it hits town. Despite the scary scrolling marquee, and the scarier roll-overs (my eyes, my eyes!), and all those animated gifs…… yeah, it’s a bit much for my taste. However, someone at work has the catalogue, and it looks like there might be some good bargains. I’ll have some cash by then, and i need a zip drive (or a CD writer if I can afford it). Could also do with some more RAM, and it looks like you can get 128Mb for mere 30 quid. Hmmmm.

Spiked Awards voting, etc

Well….. hmm…. the voting for the SPIKED Awards is all done, and we have winners. *g* They won’t be announced until Wednesday, though, as I still have to finish off making some of the awards, and put the winning site and fic titles on the ones I already have. And I’m working another 5 day stretch again. Yes, I know most people work 5 days in a row, but I do shifts. Still, another 2 and a half weeks of it, and then I’ve taken 4 days leave which actually gives me 9 days off. Yay! :-) I’ll probably be spending the time getting my sites all up to date. Heh.

I know it’s silly, but I keep having dreams that I’ve found Worf. *sigh* There wasn’t any sign of him by the railtracks, in the end. Pesky animal that he is. But I hope it was him, cos at least that would mean he’s not far away. I still wonder if he’s trying to get back to London….. urgh.

Oh, hey, and I’m writing again…. I’d taken a bit of a break, but then I got inspired and now I’ve got 3 on the go. All Spike-y fic, of course. Hmm, actually, I’ve got 5 on the go if you count Night Walks On (I occasionally do bits of it, but it’s depressing writing a story you know no-one’s interested in), and the Harmony fic I’ve been playing around with since last summer. That’s a fun one, but it keeps getting interrupted. Oh well….. back to work….

Why oh why?

Why do I have to click everything at least twice before it will believe that I do want to go there or do that? Is my mouse broken? *shakes it* Could be. Probably full of carpet and cat fluff. Teenage Dirtbag. I like that song. I like sugar snap peas, too. It’s my day off. I’ve cleaned some stuff, and I should clean some more. Like the dining room and the kitchen. *sigh* Stupid housework. I have too many websites to do……

Yep, I’m updating sites. Revived The SPIKED Awards yesterday. They were originally sposed to be done at the beginning of December. Hahahaha….. but then real life happened. Anyway, now I’m doing British Buffy and the UKBAWC, plus checking out stuff for another awards thing I help judge, and checking sites for Slash Sluts which I help Megs out with. One of these days, I’ll get me a real life. Oh but hey, talking of which, we won the pub quiz (again – *snerk*) last night. But this time they made us go into two smaller teams, cos we always win. So we came first (Mark, Sally, Barry, Dave, and me), and the others (Pete, Phillippa, Finn, Finn’s sister and Kevin) came about 3rd. Heheheh. No conferring, either. Yay us – we got free beer! :-)

Hmm…. ooops.

Hmm…. ooops. I’ve just realised that not only am I going to be missing my brother’s 21st birthday to go Spike-stalking, but when we’re at Noc 3K the following weekend, we’ll be missing Father’s Day. Hope Dad won’t mind both his offspring deserting him in favour of some American TV actors….. *g* I can at … Continue reading “Hmm…. ooops.”

It’s a cruel world….) or something, at the con (heh, he’ll have fun taking that home on the train). Maybe Dad would like one too….

Sods law

Well, there’s sods law for you. I’ve been in this job for what, 4 weeks, and I knew I had it for at least 3 weeks before that. And what do I get today? A phone call from an agency I’d registered with in the autumn, and who had only called me before with office … Continue reading “Sods law”

Well, there’s sods law for you. I’ve been in this job for what, 4 weeks, and I knew I had it for at least 3 weeks before that. And what do I get today? A phone call from an agency I’d registered with in the autumn, and who had only called me before with office admin type jobs, but apparantly never got me an interview (was I too overqualified?). But *now*… now they call me and say they have a web design job they want to put me forward for! In Sussex, by the way – we weren’t fixed on which end of the country we wanted to move to. Isn’t that just typical? Still, I probably wouldn’t have got anywhere with it, or the pay would’ve been crap, or something. And where I am is good, so that’s OK. Also, they have webdesign departments within the company, so there’s that possibility too…… But still – TCHA!!

Oh, and I booked my holiday off work today for the Spike-stalking expedition that I’m going on in June with Luna & Noxy. Heehee! I dunno, poor James Marsters……
